Front Yard Garden Update: January

The garden has survived the cold snap we had last month. I planned to cut the artichokes back and mulch them heavily, but the frost beat me to it. They're doing quite well surrounded by the leaves Uncle Mark gives me from his yard.

Wouldn't these look great surrounded by poppies and chives? Garden fashionistas say that's "The Look" for Spring 2012. ;o) I'll order my poppy and chive seeds from Renee's Garden later this month.

The purple ornamental kale are keeping the weeds company along the sidewalk.  I just got these at the farmer's market and am hoping they'll get bigger quickly. The lavender in the background withstood the frosty nights well too.

Up closer to the house, the snapdragons and calendula were unfazed by the cold. Maybe the red hot poker is keeping everybody warm.

Jackjack's strawberries are also mulched, and apart from the red leaves they are doing well. The parsley is going crazy, and I cut and dried a big bunch for use later this winter.

All this talk about the front yard and I haven't talked about the backyard at all. BrownThumbPapa built me a couple of new raised beds, and I'm growing garlic, onions, snow peas, cilantro, and spinach in those. I might even get brave and try potatoes again!

How does your garden grow this winter? Tell us in the comments!

  1. Those look nice... Do you have to cover them at all? I have a couple of artichoke plants out back that seem to be doing well so far in spite of the cold

  2. Love your gardens! My onions are growing and the lettuce, parsley and cilantro are still holding their own

  3. Don't cut back your artichokes. You only cut them back when they die back from summer heat. Let them grow through the winter. If you cut them back now, you might inhibit your harvest this spring.
